Keiki Car Seat Program

the Waimanalo Health Center

Is your child buckled up safely?

Nearly 90% of the child safety seats checked last year on O`ahu were installed incorrectly. The Waimānalo Health Center’s nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide safety education and assist parents in safely installing their child safety seat. Installation assistance is available weekly on Monday mornings by appointment only. Car seat purchasing assistance is also available to families who financially qualify.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact:

Safety Tips For Your Keiki Car Seats

  • Harness should be snug against your child and the harness retainer clip should be at armpit level.
  • Provide your child with soft toys and soft covered books to keep them happy in their safety seat.
  • Do not give children foods on sticks to eat while riding. A crash or sudden stop could cause the stick to lodge in their throat.
  • Infant safety seats that double as carriers should have the handle back during transport.  Left in the carrying position, the handle can interfere with the designed motion of the seat in a crash.
  • Never install a safety seat in a sideways-facing seat (like a pickup jumpseat).
  • Never use a seat that has been involved in a crash-- it may have damage you can't see with the naked eye.
  • Send in the registration card that comes with your new seat.  That's the best way the manufacturer can advise you of a recall.
  • Save your receipt when you purchase a car seat and receive a $25 tax credit when you file your Hawai`i State Taxes.

The Waimānalo Health Center’s Keiki Car Seat Program is funded through the Department of Health’s Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition.
